What is the Early Prevention of Obesity Childhood (EPOCH) Trial repository?

The EPOCH trial repository is a listing of intervention trials which have been designed to prevent obesity in early childhood and beyond.

We collate information from randomised trials where the trials have introduced preventive measures which may impact on child's growth and development.

Inclusion criteria

To be included in the repository, trials must:

  1. be randomised trials
  2. have the main aim of the intervention to prevent childhood obesity
  3. start interventions in the first two years of childhood or prior to this
  4. continue interventions for at least 6 months postnatally
  5. undertake implementation of an intervention that includes a component related to lifestyle (e.g. early feeding, parenting, physical activity, sleep).
  6. have a follow up time of at least 2 years.

Aims of the repository

The primary aims of the repository are to:

  1. Identify potential research areas: summarising and describing intervention trials in progress can make it easier to identify gaps in trial research in this critical area.
  2. To promote research collaboration: enabling researchers and health care practitioners to identify trials in which they may have an interest could result in more effective collaboration among researchers.
  3. To improve trial quality: sharing information may lead to improvements in the quality of trials by making it possible to identify the best tools to use and measurements to take

To be included in our repository please provide the following information:

  • name
  • trial registration number
  • objectives
  • main design features
  • sample size and recruitment status
  • treatments/interventions under investigation
  • outcomes being assessed
  • principal investigators
  • contact details for specific trial information

In the future we plan to form a collaboration of early prevention of childhood obesity researchers and eventually pool data to inform evidence based policy.
