Congratulations to Dr Vicki Brown, EPOCH EMCR who has been awarded the prestigious Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (2020-2021). Over the course of the two year Fellowship Vicki will explore the value of commonly used early childhood obesity prevention intervention outcomes, with the overarching aim of better informing economic evaluation and priority-setting.
Early childhood obesity is prevalent, requiring cost-effective interventions. While few interventions have demonstrated an effect on body weight itself, many show benefits on obesity-related outcomes such as diet or activity. Whether such outcomes are seen as value-for-money across stakeholder groups, including policy-makers/funders, parents, clinicians/health practitioners or community stakeholders, is however unknown. Vickis Fellowship will: determine the most policy-relevant outcomes for early childhood obesity prevention; estimate the value of these outcomes by stakeholder group; and, explore how these value judgements differ between groups. This knowledge will directly inform economic evaluation and resource allocation, so that interventions considered good value-for-money are prioritised.
